I'm Gert-Jan van Rooyen, a Senior Lecturer in Telecommunications at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. I spend most of my research time at the MIH Media Lab as Director. I focus on new media technologies: applying cutting-edge research in Telecommunications, Signal Theory and Software Engineering to the emerging ways in which humans communicate with each other and with computers. Web applications, mobile technology, online games and futuristic stuff like augmented reality (AR) are what drive me.
I live in Somerset West on the foothills of the Helderberg mountains, where I can watch the sun set over False Bay and Cape Point. I have a gorgeous wife (a fashion designer) and a handsome year-old boy who is the apple of his dad's eye.
